Why a church has a camp

Christian education with the walls taken down.

Camp Lee is part of how Anniston First helps people grow in faith. Some of that happens in a Sunday school room. Some of it happens on a trail, at a campfire, or forty feet up a climbing wall.

It is also open to anyone. You don’t have to be Methodist, or a church at all, to book a weekend here. Every group gets the same welcome, shaped by seven values:

  • Displaying God’s love
  • Showing hospitality
  • Stewarding nature
  • Offering peace
  • Providing Christian ministry
  • Cultivating community relationships
  • Creating a sense of belonging
How it got here

A Scout camp, a gift of stock, and sixty years of building.

The camp is named for Arthur H. Lee, whose gift in 1966 made it possible for the church to buy the land. Everything here since then has been built, kept up and paid for by people who wanted others to have a place like this.

  1. 1931

Camp Zinn opens as a Boy Scout camp, run by the Choccolocco Council.

  2. 1965

The Scouts move to a new site, and the property goes up for sale.

  3. 1966

On August 11, Arthur H. Lee gives Anniston First 1,000 shares of Lee Brass common stock. The church sells the shares and buys the camp.

  4. Today

382 acres, with lakes, lodges, cabins, a pool, a climbing wall, a ropes course and miles of wooded trail.
